Outland is a graphical multiplayer game network for Macintosh users
available through the Internet and by modem. Currently, the applications we
have available are Spaceward Ho!, Chess, Reversi, Hearts, Galley, Backstab,
and a graphical BBS.
You can connect to Outland if your Mac has Internet access using MacTCP, if
you have a Unix, Delphi, or other account that can Telnet, or
if you dial our modems in Palo Alto, California. If you do not have access
to the Internet, check out "Internet Access to Outland" in the Documentation
folder.
For more information, or if you are interested in developing games for
Outland, contact us at 1-800-PLAY-OUT, or info@outland.com.
You'll need to have a credit card handy while creating a
new account.
INSTALLATION:
1. Use the Outland Installer to create a folder containing the Outland
software anywhere on your hard disk.
2. Read the files in Documentation as necessary.
CONNECTING TO OUTLAND:
1. Open up Outland f and run the Outland Gateway. The first time you run
the Gateway, go to Connection under the Settings menu. The Gateway
will attempt to configure the connection properly, but in case you need to
do it by hand, here are the steps.
a) IF YOU ARE USING MacTCP to connect through the Internet, select
Outland TCP Tool from the Method popup menu. Our host name is
dover.outland.com, port 4000. We strongly recommend that you update to
MacTCP 2.0.6 to get the most reliable connection. Also make sure that Direct
access is checked on the Settings menu.
b) IF YOU HAVE A UNIX, DELPHI OR OTHER ACCOUNT THAT CAN TELNET, choose
Telnet from the Settings menu. Now go to Connection and select Outland CCL Modem
Tool from the Method popup menu (it may already be selected). In the Phone
text entry box, type the number you normally dial with a terminal program to
reach your account that has Telnet (eg. a Delphi access number). Under the Modem popup menu, select the type of your modem if it appears in the menu; otherwise use Generic Modem.
When you connect, a terminal window will appear. You can now use your Unix, Delphi, or other account to obtain telnet access. Outland's telnet address is "dover.outland.com". The Outland graphics software will then take over the connection. Delphi users may need to type /ECHO HOST in the Internet area before connecting so that local echo will be turned off.
c) If you are calling Outland's modems in Palo Alto, select Outland CCL
Modem Tool from the Method popup menu. In the Phone text entry box, type
325-9904 or 1-415-325-9904. Under the Modem pop-up menu, select an
appropriate modem setting. Some high-speed modems may require special
settings files, like the ones used with AppleTalk Remote Access. Settings
files for common modems are available on the major ftp sites. Make sure that
Direct access is checked on the Settings menu.
2. Click on the Connect button and choose New User.
3. During the account creation process, you will be asked for either a
credit card number or disk serial number.
THE GAMES:
Spaceward Ho! is the famous galactic conquest game by Delta Tao Software. Colonize planets, mine for metal, build ships, plan you economies, form alliances, and battle enemies ... do whatever it takes to conquer the galaxy.
Outland Chess includes a graphical board and pieces, sounds, player rankings, game clocks, and the ability to save games as QuickTime(tm) movies.
Reversi is a time-honored game of strategy. Take turns placing your pieces to surround your opponent. The rules are the same as the board game Othello™.
Backstab is fast paced game of foresight. Capture your opponent’s pieces, but watch your back!
The Crossroads is not a game; it's a message board. Please use it for bug reports, comments, questions and discussions.
